| Summary, etc. | L’objectif de cet article est de mettre en lumière les rationalités du gestionnaire de la sécurité privée au sein du champ de la sécurité à Montréal. Quarante-cinq entrevues ont été ainsi analysées à l’aide de la métaphore du capital pour dégager ses différentes stratégies de conquête du champ. Alors que nos données montrent clairement que les gestionnaires de la sécurité privée ont acquis suffisamment de ressources pour ne pas dépendre excessivement de la police, cette dernière possède toujours un ascendant certain sur la première, notamment du fait des pouvoirs spéciaux qui lui sont alloués. En outre, l’industrie souffre d’un manque de légitimité qu’elle tente de combler par la reconnaissance étatique. Enfin, l’industrie ne cherche pas tant à concurrencer la police qu’à s’en distinguer pour occuper une place à part du champ. |

| Summary, etc. | The goal of this paper is to enlighten the rationalities of the private security managers in the field of security in Montréal. Forty-five interviews were conducted and analysed through the metaphor of the capital in a way to understand their strategies. We found that the managers were organized enough to not excessively depend on the police, even if they still need them,most notably because of some of their unique powers. Moreover, the industry suffers from a lack of legitimacy that it seeks to get through a certain form of state recognition. Finally, we found that the industry is more interested in distinguishing itself than competing with the police, in a way to occupy a specific and unique place in the field. |

| Summary, etc. | El objetivo de este artículo es revelar la lógica de la gestión de la seguridad privada en el marco general de la gestión de la seguridad en Montreal. Se analizan cuarenta y cinco entrevistas utilizando la metáfora del capital para observar las diferentes estrategias de ocupación del terreno. A pesar de que nuestros datos muestran claramente que los responsables de la seguridad privada disponen de recursos suficientes para no depender excesivamente de la policía, esta última guarda siempre un cierto ascendiente sobre aquella, principalmente a causa de los poderes especiales que le han sido conferidos. Además, la industria de la seguridad privada sufre de una falta de legitimidad que intenta compensar a través del reconocimiento estatal. Finalmente, la industria de la seguridad privada no busca competir con la policía sino distinguirse de ella para poder así ocupar un lugar específico sobre el terreno. |

| Summary, etc. | Ziel dieses Artikels ist die Analyse der Steuerungslogiken privater Sicherheitsdienste in Montreal. Auf der Basis von 45 Interviews werden die unterschiedlichen Strategien privater Sicherheitsdienste unter der Metapher «Kapital» verständlich gemacht. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Manager dieser Unternehmen genügend Ressourcen mobilisieren können, um relative unabhängig von der Polizei agieren zu können, auch wenn sie aufgrund ihrer spezifischen Eingriffsmacht auf die Kooperation mit der Polizei angewiesen sind. Allerdings leiden die Unternehmen unter dem Fehlen von Legitimität, das sie durch eine staatliche Anerkennung zu beheben suchen. Schließlich treten die Sicherheitsunternehmen nicht in Konkurrenz zur Polizei, sondern versuchen einen eigenständigen Platz im Feld der Sicherheitsproduktion zu besetzen. |
