Summary, etc. | Sociological observation reveals that in France, nature, examined through the legal frameworks that organize its protection, far from being an object of agreement between individuals and social groups is, on the contrary the object of tensions, rivalries and even very strong antagonisms that can develop into open violence. These phenomena are related to appropriation mechanisms difficult to objectivize as they are usually interpreted through logics of tension and rivalry. Thus, nature problems seem to be fundamentally of a political character. This paper is an attempt to analyze the backgrounds that can shed light on this specificity, in particular through the comparison with other cultural traditions, Anglo-Saxon or Japanese. It brings out how, more than others, French culture has built itself through the recusation of sensibility, emotion, subjectivity as a shared reality at the basis of values and motor of action for the benefit of rationality supposed to be organizing collective life – and the knowledge that can be acquired about it through social sciences –, which finds its expression in institutional and discursive structures the functions of which are to downrate the individual for the good of the collective, these discursive frameworks supposedly ensuring its mastery and guidance. Nature seems to be a highly relevant revelator of this cultural setting and of the difficulties associated with it, particularly as an obstacle to other approaches based on other references such as personal and corporate initiative and innovation, social participation, individual responsibility and, on a wider level, ethics. |
