Summary, etc. | Based on both observations and semi-structured interviews with 82 adolescents and 26 of their parents, this paper studies the extent to which same-sex and single-sex cycling practices during adolescence help to reinforce or disrupt the gender order. It is shown that in both configurations, peers frequently play different roles resulting in differentiated experiences that do not lead to the same socializing effects, especially when there are differences in age, social background, morphology or experience, and when the interactants are not given the same responsibilities. Thus, the issue is perhaps not so much about how to promote gender diversity as to question the forms of gender diversity that should be promoted. |
