| Summary, etc. | A work of celebration and lamentation, but also of admonition, La Serre’s Mausolée (1634) is first and foremost a monument: “Built to withstand the test of centuries,” rich in “invention,” “craftsmanship,” and “art,” it can be read as the analogon to the funerary architecture that presides over it. To begin with, this article will focus on this act of monumentalizing ‐ which exalts the power visual images and discourse have to “bring to light” an absent figure. Then we will show that La Serre’s Mausolée is more than just an encomiastic exercise with its own constraints. We will suggest that La Serre subtly outlines the contours of a second work, contained, so to speak, in a virtual state within the first; and in doing so, engages in formal exploration. |

| Summary, etc. | Ouvrage de célébration et de déploration, mais aussi d’admonition, le Mausolée (1634) de La Serre a pour premier enjeu de faire monument : « bâti à l’épreuve des siècles », riche en « invention », en « industrie » et en « art », il se donne à lire comme l’analogon de l’architecture funéraire qui lui préside. C’est à ce geste de monumentalisation – qui sollicite à la fois l’image visuelle et le discours dans leur aptitude conjointe à « étaler au jour » une figure absente – que cet article est d’abord consacré. Nous voyons ensuite qu’au-delà des contraintes inhérentes à l’exercice encomiastique qui lui est imposé, La Serre dessine en filigrane les contours d’une œuvre seconde, contenue pour ainsi dire à l’état virtuel dans la première : il se livre en cela à une expérience formelle. |
