Summary, etc. | RésuméL’univers du populaire jeu en réseau World of Warcraft, se caractérise par l’originalité des références culturelles qu’il emploie et recompose, mais aussi par l’utilisation virtuelle de la pensée animique. Ces composantes anthropologiques de mana, d’animal totem, de démons étaient jadis vecteurs de crainte et de distance sociale comme tenait à le démontrer Freud dans Totem et tabou. Elles sont à présent l’objet d’un usage courant pour l’avatar du joueur, dans l’espace virtuel. De même la science et la technique y occupent un statut particulier qui s’apparente aux usages antiques de la métaphysique présocratique. L’analyse de ces dimensions symboliques et des considérations éthiques en jeu donne des clefs pour mieux comprendre ce qui retient l’intérêt du joueur quant à son avatar, et qui sont autant d’outils pour l’adulte et le thérapeute. |

Summary, etc. | Anthropological and cultural figures in the game World of WarcraftThe universe of the popular network game World of Warcraft is characterized by the originality of cultural references it uses and recomposes, but also by the virtual use of animist thought. These anthropological components like mana, totem animal, or demons were once vectors of fear and social distance as Freud analyzed in Totem and taboo. They are now commonly used objects for the player’s avatar in virtual reality. In a similar way, science and technology occupy a special status which is in many ways similar to the ancient Presocratic metaphysics.The analysis of these symbolic dimensions and the ethical considerations involved are keys to a better understanding of what holds the player’s interest in his avatar, and may be tools for adults and therapists. |
