| Summary, etc. | Le dîner qui eut lieu le 18 novembre 1792 à l’hôtel White à Paris est bien connu de l’historiographie en langue anglaise comme l’acte de naissance du « British Club ». Toutefois, les Britanniques qui célébraient les récentes victoires des armées françaises ont souvent été réduits à des traîtres chimériques et donc dignes de peu d’intérêt. Il en va de même pour les convives irlandais dont la présence fut perçue comme une simple péripétie d’un nationalisme naissant. Pourtant, en examinant les multiples significations derrière cette manifestation de sociabilité dans le Paris de la Ire République, les contours d’un républicanisme irlandais précoce et révolutionnaire se dessinent, nuançant l’interprétation révisionniste qui voit dans les premiers républicains irlandais des opportunistes et révolutionnaires à contrecœur. Les convives irlandais de ce dîner permettent également de retracer les liens entre « catholicisme des Lumières » et républicanisme irlandais, entre France et Irlande. |

| Summary, etc. | The diner that took place on 18 November 1792 at White’s Hotel, in Paris, is well-known in historiography as the birth of the (in) famous British Club. Yet, the British who celebrated the recent French victories have long been considered as deluded traitors and, as such, little worthy of interest. The same goes for the Irish « convives » whose presence at the diner was seen as a mere anecdote in the broader narrative of the birth of Irish nationalism. However, by examining the multiple layers of meaning behind this manifestation of sociability in Paris in the early Republic, the outlines of an original and revolutionary Irish republicanism can be traced to an earlier moment of the 1790s than previously admitted, challenging the revisionist narrative which sees the first Irish republicans as late, reluctant and opportunist revolutionaries. The Irish guests at White’s also underline the link between Irish republicanism and a « Catholicism of the Enlightenment », between France and Ireland. |
