| Summary, etc. | À partir d’une série chronologique d’ouvrages consacrés aux fêtes de souveraineté depuis 1789 en France, l’article questionne la fonction intégrative qui leur est ordinairement reconnue : le fait d’éprouver ensemble les mêmes émotions fabriquerait et/ou renforcerait le lien social. La démonstration suivie discute l’idée que les manifestations de liesse (applaudissements, acclamations) puissent représenter un bon indicateur de l’engagement militant, sinon des pensées politiques, des participants. À la question de savoir ce qu’est un enthousiasme civique, il répond simplement : un enthousiasme manifesté dans une situation civique reconnue comme telle par les participants eux-mêmes et/ou ainsi qualifiée par les organisateurs et commentateurs, profanes comme savants, de l’événement. |

| Summary, etc. | What is ‘civic enthusiasm’? On historiography of political festivals in France since 1789 Based on books dealing with political festivities in France since 1789, this article discusses the integrative function which is frequently assigned to festive events by scholars. That function can be summed up in the following proposition: experiencing similar emotions into collective gatherings is supposed to provide or promote socialization. The paper rejects the idea that popular fervor could be an efficient tool to measure civic engagement. It raises the following question: how can we qualify politically enthusiasm, for example by calling it ‘civic’ or ‘imperial’, ‘patriotic’ or ‘republican’? The given answer is the following one: public enthusiasm is not civic because an inquiry may find ‘patriotism’ into participants’ minds, but simply because the civic character of the context (and the festive behavior – made of applauses, cheers and joy – whichis therefore expected) is recognized by the public and assigned by organizers and/or commentators. |
