| Summary, etc. | Cette tête en bronze (H : 11,2 cm), conservée au musée Bargoin de Clermont-Ferrand, a été trouvée fortuitement durant l’été 1970 près de Bas-et-Lezat (Puy-de-Dôme). Depuis lors, elle est attribuée à l’art « alexandrin ». Mais c’est seulement le modèle primitif qui est originaire de l’Égypte hellénisée : la présente tête doit bien plutôt avoir été produite en Italie ou en Gaule. En la comparant avec une statuette en bronze d’un nain phallique dansant, conservée à Boston, et avec une autre plus petite provenant des fouilles italiennes de Bakchias (Fayoum), l’a. démontre que la tête négroïde du musée Bargoin a appartenu à une statue de nain légèrement plus petite que la taille naturelle (hauteur totale restituée : environ 50 cm). Ce résultat est d’autant plus intéressant qu’on a alors affaire à la plus grande représentation plastique de nain dans l’art antique. Son style permet de la dater vers la fin du ier s. av. J.-C. ou le début du ier s. ap. J.-C. |

| Summary, etc. | This bronze head (h. 11.2 cm) was discovered by chance near Bas-et-Lezat (Dép. Puy-de-Dôme/F) in the summer of 1970, and has long been in the musée Bargoin, Clermont-Ferrand. Since its discovery, it has been considered a product of ‘Alexandrian’ art. However, only the original model came from Hellenized Egypt, while the head itself was most likely made in Italy or Gaul. By comparison with the bronze statuette of a dancing phallic dwarf preserved in Boston and a somewhat smaller comparative piece from the Italian excavations at Bakchias (Fayum), the a. shows that musée Bargoin’s negroid head belonged to the almost life-size statue of a dwarf. This result is of importance as the figure, reconstructed to an original height of approx. 50 cm, thus represents by far the largest known depiction of a dwarf in ancient art. Judging from the style, it is datable to the late 1st century BC or the early 1st century AD. |

| Summary, etc. | Der hier behandelte 11,2 cm hohe Bronzekopf wurde im Sommer 1970 zufällig bei Bas-et-Lezat (Dép. Puy-de-Dôme/F.) gefunden und befindet sich seit langem im Musée Bargoin in Clermont-Ferrand. Seit seiner Auffindung wird er der ‚alexandrinischen’ Kunst zugeschrieben. Aus dem hellenisierten Land am Nil kam aber nur das Vorbild, während der Kopf selbst am ehesten in Italien oder Gallien entstanden sein dürfte. Durch den Vergleich mit der Bronzestatuette eines tanzenden phallischen Zwergs in Boston und einem etwas kleineren Vergleichsstück aus den italienischen Ausgrabungen von Bakchias (Fayum) gelingt dem Verfasser der Nachweis, dass der negroide Kopf zu einer fast lebensgroßen Statue eines Zwergs gehörte. Dieses Ergebnis ist insofern von Bedeutung als es sich bei der auf ca. 50 cm Höhe ergänzten Figur um die mit Abstand größte plastische Zwergendarstellung der antiken Kunst handelt. Der Stil spricht für eine Datierung ins späte 1. Jh. v. Chr. bis frühe 1. Jh. n. Chr. |
