| Summary, etc. | L’ Histoire de Guillaume le Maréchal est une biographie chevaleresque anglo-normande rédigée entre 1224 et 1226 par un certain Jean le Trouvère. Souvent étudiée comme témoignage de première main sur les mœurs de l’aristocratie anglo-normande de la fin du xiie siècle, ce récit revêt un intérêt particulier en raison des nombreuses interventions du narrateur. Deux conclusions peuvent être dégagées à la fin de cette étude : d’une part, l’ Histoire de Guillaume le Maréchal présente suffisamment de divergences avec le corpus bourguignon du xve siècle pour la considérer comme appartenant à une tradition différente. D’autre part, la notion d’hybridité qui s’attache au genre spécifique de la biographie chevaleresque ne peut pas être validée, car cette dernière est régie selon un système propre et indépendant de ses sources d’inspiration que sont l’hagiographie, l’épopée, l’hagiographie et le roman. |

| Summary, etc. | The History of William Marshal is an Anglo-Norman chivalric biography written between 1224 and 1226 by a certain Jean le Trouvère. Often studied as a first-hand account of the customs of the Anglo-Norman aristocracy at the end of the 12th century, this story is of particular interest because of the numerous interventions of the narrator. Two conclusions can be drawn at the end of this study: on the one hand, the History of William Marshal presents enough divergences from the 15th century Burgundian corpus for it to be considered as belonging to a different tradition. On the other hand, the notion of hybridity that is associated with the specific genre of chivalric biography cannot be validated, as the latter is governed according to its own system, independent of its sources of inspiration, which are hagiography, epic and romance. |
