Summary, etc. | Au Québec, de nombreux élèves de 6e année (11-12 ans) éprouvent des difficultés à comprendre et à rédiger des textes. Cet article a pour objectif de décrire les habiletés d’élèves de 6e année (n=80) en ce qui a trait à la compréhension et à la production d’idées principales contenues dans des paragraphes de type informatif. De plus, ces habiletés sont comparées avec celles d’élèves de 4e année (n=66), afin d’examiner s’il existe ou non une différence entre les performances d’élèves venant de ces différents degrés scolaires. Les données issues d’un court test à choix multiples sur l’identification des idées principales, puis d’une tâche d’écriture, ont permis de constater que ces élèves manifestaient certaines habiletés relatives aux idées principales en lecture et en écriture, sans toutefois indiquer de différences entre les degrés scolaires. Enfin, à la lumière de ces données, un enseignement plus spécifique ciblant la compréhension et l’organisation des idées principales, en lecture et en écriture, est suggéré auprès de cette population. |

Summary, etc. | In Quebec, many pupils in their sixth year of elementary school (11-12 year olds), have difficulty understanding and writing texts. This paper describes the skills of Sixth year pupils (80 children) regarding the understanding and production of the main ideas in documentary style paragraphs whose object is to inform. These skills are compared with those of Fourth year pupils (66 children) in order to see if there is a difference in the performance of students at different stages of schooling. The data come from short multiple answer tests concerning the identification of the main ideas in various paragraphs and a short writing task, and show that these pupils have a certain number of skills regarding the identification of main ideas when reading or writing, without indicating any difference linked to stage of schooling. The data also lead to suggestions enabling more focused teaching of the identification and organisation of main ideas in reading and writing for this population. |
