| Summary, etc. | Emmanuel Terray, who passed away this year, was one of the pioneers of French Marxist anthropology. His book, Marxism and “Primitive” Societies: Two Studies (1972, trad. Mary Klopper) was published in French in 1969 as Le marxisme devant les sociétés « primitives » in the famous “Theory” series edited by Louis Althusser. In fact, it is a reflexive work which tries to demonstrate the accuracy of Marxist concepts applied to the analysis of precapitalist African social formations. This project is elaborated through a critical reading of the Gouro anthropology thesis published by Claude Meillassoux in 1964. The paper presents the content of the book then portrays the French post-Stalinist period of the 1960-1970’s which witnessed the reinvention of French social sciences. It then compares quickly the various Marxist approaches of C. Meillassoux, M. Godelier and P.-P. Rey (and of course Terray) and defines them as a strictly ethnico-social approach. Of course, Terray puts clearly on the forefront the political dimensions of Marxist analysis but he distinguishes quite strongly empirical fieldwork and practical activism. In conclusion, the author of this paper regrets that Terray progressively distanced himself from the discipline of anthropology by stating that anthropology is finally of no great help for the elaboration of his political commitment and his very strong activism for the defense of illegal immigrants. His very French centered view of anthropology and his little involvement in the debates of the 1990-2000’s confirm his purely philosophical rereading of Marxist theory and the symbolical and not at all epistemological conception of his initial analytical program — which contradicts the very spirit of Marxism. |

| Summary, etc. | Emmanuel Terray, qui vient de nous quitter, est l’un des pionniers de l’anthropologie marxiste française. Pourtant son ouvrage, Le marxisme devant les sociétés « primitives », publié en 1969 dans la célèbre collection « Théorie » dirigée par le philosophe Louis Althusser, n’est qu’un ouvrage réflexif qui s’efforce de mesurer l’adéquation des concepts marxistes de base à la nature des formations sociales précapitalistes africaines au travers d’une critique de la démarche de Meillassoux dans son anthropologie des Gouro de 1964. Après avoir présenté le contenu des deux études de l’ouvrage, l’article retrace à grands traits l’atmosphère post-stalinienne de la réinvention des sciences sociales françaises dans les années 1960-1970. Comparant tout aussi rapidement les manières différentes de marxiser l’anthropologie selon C. Meillassoux, M. Godelier et P.-P. Rey, et bien sûr E. Terray, l’auteur confirme l’approche uniquement ethnico-sociétale de tous ces chercheurs. La dimension consubstantiellement politique de l’analyse marxiste n’a évidemment pas échappé à Terray qui préfère pourtant distinguer nettement l’enquête empirique de certaines pratiques du militantisme. L’auteur regrette d’ailleurs en conclusion que la distanciation progressive de l’anthropologie par Terray l’ait peu conduit à utiliser sa discipline comme source d’information et d’analyse pour les engagements moraux et politiques dont il se réclamait (notamment la lutte pour la défense des sans-papiers). Sa perspective largement franco-centrée de la discipline et sa non-participation aux grands débats anthropologiques des années 1990-2010 confirment sa relecture purement philosophique des concepts marxistes et confirme la place plus symbolique qu’épistémologique de son programme théorique disciplinaire initial, ce qui semble contraire à l’esprit du marxisme lui-même. |
