| Summary, etc. | Cet article propose d’étudier, à l’échelle départementale de la France métropolitaine, la variation du nombre d’écoles et l’évolution des effectifs d’élèves de l’enseignement primaire entre 1816 et 2021. Au xixe siècle, l’augmentation du nombre d’élèves se situe dans un contexte de baisse globale de la fécondité française, engagée depuis la fin du xviiie siècle et accompagnée par de vastes migrations intérieures. Sur le temps long de deux siècles, peut-on identifier des dynamiques comparables entre des groupes de départements ? L’étude repose sur la reconstitution puis l’analyse des courbes départementales d’écoles, d’élèves et de population afin d’établir la temporalité et l’intensité de leurs évolutions. Elle montre qu’après une progression généralisée du nombre d’écoles et d’élèves au xixe siècle, des modifications se font jour, liées aux évolutions distinctes des démographies départementales. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper purposes to study at the leel of the départements of metropolitan France, the variation in the number of schools anf the evolution in the number of pupils in the primary school system between 1816 and 2021. In the 19th century, the increase in the number of pupils takes place within the context of an overall fall in french fecundiy, beginning in the late 18th century and relayed by important internal migations. Is it posible to identify similar dynamics over the two centuries between groups f départements ? This study is based on the reconstitution then the analysis of graphs by départements for schools, pupil and popu-laion, in order to establish a temporality and an intensity in evolution. It shows that after an overall increase in the number of schools and pupils in the 19th century, modifications appear, linked to the different demographic evolutions of the départements. |
