Based on a qualitative study involving french speaking foster care alumni, it highlights the linguistic challenges involved in naming substitute parental figures and the emotional relationships that have developed during the placement. The absence of specific terms to describe the links with the foster family and the rules laid down by adults regarding naming contribute to the ambiguity of the children’s situation, and generate feelings of emotional lack that can be long-lasting. The conclusion of this text calls on professionals to support and value the linguistic and relational initiatives of children in care, rather than trying to guide them. |

Summary, etc. | Cet article examine la complexité des désignations familiales chez les enfants en famille d’accueil. À partir d’une étude qualitative auprès d’anciens placés, il met en lumière les difficultés linguistiques pour nommer les figures parentales pendant le placement et les relations affectives qui se sont nouées. L’absence de termes spécifiques pour désigner les liens avec la famille d’accueil et les règles portées par les adultes en matière de nomination contribuent à l’ambiguïté de la situation des enfants, et génèrent des sentiments de manque affectif parfois durables. La conclusion de ce texte invite les professionnels à accompagner et à valoriser les créations linguistiques et les initiatives relationnelles des enfants placés, plutôt qu’à chercher à les guider. |
