| Summary, etc. | Pendant plus de trois décennies, Production de marchandises par des marchandises (Sraffa, 1960) a constitué l’unique source d’inspiration pour ceux qui tentaient de comprendre ce que « Sraffa avait réellement voulu dire ». L’ouverture des Archives Sraffa à la Bibliothèque Wren de Cambridge en 1993 a changé cette situation en permettant aux chercheurs d’avoir accès à un grand nombre de manuscrits et de contributions de Sraffa inédits pour la plupart et rendant moins malaisée la tâche de retrouver l’originalité du message de Sraffa au sein de différentes thématiques de recherche. L’un des domaines pour lesquels cette dernière remarque s’applique particulièrement porte sur le rôle joué par les facteurs techniques et/ou sociaux dans la distinction entre « biens nécessaires » et surplus, surtout si on le relie à la tentative de reconstruction de l’économie politique classique projetée par cet auteur. Dans ce dernier contexte, la notion de surplus joue un rôle essentiel et il est par conséquent naturel de réexaminer sa définition et d’étudier sa signification profonde et son opérationnalité. L’objet principal de ce texte est d’étudier ce rôle. L’attention se porte alors sur la manière dont les facteurs techniques et sociaux peuvent fonder la distinction entre « biens nécessaires » et surplus et conduire à une interprétation de la contribution de Sraffa fondée sur les notions d’« instantané photographique » et de « représentation synoptique » (au sens de Wittgenstein, cf. Arena, 2013) propres à caractériser la diversité d’économies admettant l’existence d’un surplus. Ces sociétés peuvent en effet être associées à des règles différentes de répartition de la valeur du surplus et dès lors être distinguées mais surtout comparées. Ces remarques conduisent à introduire une interprétation de la contribution de Sraffa débouchant sur une analyse typologique, voire morphologique, de systèmes économiques différents. |

| Summary, etc. | For more than three decades, Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities (Sraffa, 1960) provided the sole source of information for those trying to understand what Sraffa “had really meant.” The opening of the Sraffa Archives in the Wren Library, Cambridge, in 1993 changed this situation by giving scholars access to a very large number of mostly unpublished manuscripts and contributions by Sraffa, thereby rendering the task of uncovering Sraffa’s original message in specific areas of investigation less difficult. One such area of investigation, for which this is particularly true, is the role played by technical and/or social factors in Sraffa’s distinction between “necessaries” and the surplus, especially in the context of his attempt to reconstruct Classical economics. In this context, the notion of surplus plays a pivotal role, and it is therefore natural to return to its definition and its characterization and to explore its real meaning and operationality. The main purpose of this paper is thus to investigate this central role of the notion of surplus. Focusing on the role of technical and social factors in the distinction between necessaries and surplus allows us to lend support to an interpretation of “snapshots” as “perspicuous representations” (in Wittgenstein’s sense, see Arena, 2013 and 2015) of different surplusbased societies. These societies can be associated with different rules of distribution of the price of the surplus and therefore made distinct and compared. This opens the way to a conception of Sraffa’s contribution as concerned with a typological analysis of different economic systems. JEL classification: B2, B4, A12, B24 |
