| Summary, etc. | L’objet de cet article est de montrer que le discours de Du Pont de Nemours sur la liberté du commerce évolue considérablement au fil du temps. S’il commence en effet par reprendre les concepts développés par François Quesnay, il abandonne par la suite progressivement le vocabulaire physiocratique et concentre son argumentation sur la réciprocité des avantages du libre-échange. Cette évolution s’explique non seulement par le souci affiché par Du Pont de vouloir convaincre ses adversaires, mais aussi par la nécessité qu’il rencontre ensuite d’adapter son discours à ceux d’Adam Smith et de Jean-Baptiste Say pour tenter de contourner les critiques qu’ils adressent aux thèses physiocratiques. |

| Summary, etc. | The purpose of this article is to show that the discourse of Du Pont de Nemours on freedom of trade evolved considerably over time. If he begins by using the concepts developed by François Quesnay, he abandoned thereafter gradually Physiocratic vocabulary and focuses his argument on mutual benefits of free trade. This transformation is explained not only by the desire of Du Pont to convince his opponents, but also by the need to adapt his discourse to those of Adam Smith and Jean Baptiste Say to try to circumvent their criticism of Physiocratic theses.
