| Summary, etc. | S’appuyant sur l’innovation apportée par le joint homocinétique Tracta, Jean-Albert Grégoire créa une voiture éponyme et fut au XXe siècle l’inlassable promoteur de la « traction avant », mode désormais dominant. Obsédé par l’amélioration de la sécurité en automobile et séduit par le potentiel des alliages d’aluminium, l’ingénieur Grégoire ne cessa de proposer ses innovations aux constructeurs, en fréquente collaboration avec la société Pechiney. Parmi elles, la « carcasse coulée » fut utilisée par les firmes Adler, Amilcar, Hotchkiss, Panhard, outre J.-A. Grégoire pour ses propres productions. Cette technique innovante engendrait un net accroissement de la rigidité des châssis et améliorait nettement la tenue de route des véhicules. De même pour les suspensions Grégoire telle « l’aérostable ». En pleine guerre (1942) il créa une voiture électrique puis une seconde vingt ans plus tard. Sur commande d’un industriel, il imagina une voiture à turbine (Socema). Synthèse de ses idées et œuvre ultime, la remarquable mais trop coûteuse Grégoire Sport ne connut qu’une gloire éphémère. Historien et critique reconnu du monde de l’automobile, Jean-Albert Grégoire fut aussi romancier. À la fin de sa vie, il rassembla sous forme d’une collection l’essentiel de ses créations. Maintenant propriété de l’Institut pour l’histoire de l’aluminium, cet ensemble est actuellement hébergé au sein du Musée national de l’automobile à Mulhouse. |

| Summary, etc. | Taking advantage of the innovation brought about by the Tracta homokinetic joint, Jean-Albert Grégoire created an eponymous motor car and throughout the 20th century was the indefatigable promoter of the now predominant front-wheel drive system. Obsessed by the idea of improving automobile safety and attracted by the potential of aluminium alloys, Grégoire constantly proposed his innovations to automakers, frequently in collaboration with Pechiney. One of them was the cast car body, used by Adler, Amilcar, Hotchkiss and Panhard in addition to J.-A. Grégoire for his own production. This innovative technique would significantly increase the rigidity of the body and distinctly improve vehicle roadholding. The same was true of the Grégoire suspension systems such as the "aerostable". In the middle of the Second World War (1942) he created an electric car and then a second one twenty years later. In response to an order from an industrial firm, he imagined a turbinepowered car, the Socema. His last creation, the remarkable Grégoire Sport, was a synthesis of his ideas but it met with only fleeting success as it was prohibitively expensive. A historian and recognised critic of the automobile world, Jean-Albert Grégoire was also a novelist. Towards the end of his life, he gathered the bulk of his work into a single collection. Now the property of the Institute for the History of Aluminium, the collection is currently housed at the National Automobile Museum in Mulhouse. |
