| Summary, etc. | L’écrivain suisse romand C. F. Ramuz (1878-1947) se méfiait de l’idée de progrès matériel. Son œuvre s’intéresse à l’homme dans son rapport à l’élémentaire, et fait du paysan la figure idéale d’une humanité vraie. Il s’adresse pourtant à un public entré de plain-pied dans la modernité technique, et situe ses récits dans l’époque contemporaine. C’est la raison pour laquelle ses textes mentionnent régulièrement l’aluminium, à mesure que la production industrielle fait entrer ce métal dans la vie quotidienne de tout un chacun. Ramuz en fait le symbole de la modernité qu’il rejette, tout en se montrant attentif et connaisseur des procédés techniques à l’œuvre dans la fabrication de celui-ci. La raison de cette présence discrète mais constante, est peut-être à trouver du côté de son éditeur et mécène, Henry-Louis Mermod, hommes d’affaires actif dans l’industrie de l’aluminium. |

| Summary, etc. | The French-speaking Swiss writer C. F. Ramuz (1878-1947) was wary of the idea of material progress. His work centres on the relationship between humans and the elementary, and presents the peasant as the ideal figure of true humanity. However, he addresses an audience that is set squarely in the modern technical world, and places his descriptions in the context of the contemporary era. For this reason, his texts regularly mention aluminium, insofar as industrial production has brought this metal into daily life for all of us. Ramuz turns this into a symbol of the modernity that he rejects, whilst revealing himself to be attentive to and knowledgeable of the technical processes at play in its production. The reason for this discreet but constant presence can perhaps be seen in his publisher and benefactor, Henry-Louis Mermod, a businessman with interests in the aluminium industry. |
