| Summary, etc. | De tout temps et dans toutes les cultures, les femmes ont désiré accoucher dans un espace intime et sécuritaire. Par l’apport des techniques et des progrès obstétricaux, dès le milieu du XXe siècle, bien que physiologique, la naissance se généralise dans le champ médical. Face au discours scientifique du personnel soignant, nous avons voulu mettre en écho les propos profanes des femmes, afin de comprendre les différentes façons d’interpréter le choix d’un lieu idéal pour accoucher. Chaque partie, médicale et profane, à sa façon, avec ses mots et ses croyances culturelles propres tente de donner sens à la représentation savante ou émotionnelle du lieu d’accouchement. Le champ d’analyse de cet article repose sur des témoignages informels collectés au cours d’une enquête dans trois maternités de la région parisienne. |

| Summary, etc. | Medical and Lay Representations of the Place to Give Birth : Between the Ideal and Reality In all times and cultures, women have wanted to give birth in an intimate and reassuring place. Since the mid-20th century, because of progress in obstetric technology, birth has generally taken place in a medical context. Faced with the medical personnel’s scientific discourse, we wanted to hear women’s version, in order to grasp the different ways of understanding the choice of an ideal place to give birth. Each party, medical or lay person, in its own way, with its own words and cultural beliefs, tries to give meaning to its representation, whether learned or emotional, of the place to give birth. The analysis in this article is based on informal testimony gathered during a study carried out in three maternity wards in the Paris region. |
