| Summary, etc. | Analysant la manière dont la catégorisation sexuelle est réellement pratiquée dans les cas d’hermaphrodisme du dix-neuvième siècle, l’auteure soutient que le sexe comme catégorie a fondamentalement changé. En présentant deux exemples (parmi les trois cents cas analysés), elle montre de quelle manière le doute portant sur le sexe était auparavant considéré comme un problème survenant entre une personne et sa communauté, et dans lequel les médecins assuraient parfois le rôle d’arbitres. Ce doute devient, à la fin du siècle, un problème entre le soi de la personne et son corps. On entreprend alors de le résoudre dans un cadre médico-psychologique individualisé. |

| Summary, etc. | By analyzing the ways of deciding to which category of sex a person should belong in nineteenth-century-Europe cases of doubtful sex, the author argues that sex as a category has profoundly changed. Presenting two examples of the three hundred cases analyzed, she shows how doubting sex at the beginning of the century was treated as a problem between a person and her community (in which doctors sometimes acted as arbiters), whereas at the end of the century it had become a problem of a person with her body, a problem to be solved within a medical-psychiatric, individualized framework. |
