520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Cicero, a Power Broker or an Unsuccessful Adviser? In his speeches, Cicero asserts that he retained considerable authority vis-à-vis Roman decision-makers and he claims to speak to them on an equal footing. However, the Correspondence gives a different perspective: victim of the choices of imperatores, from the exile of 58 to the Lucca conference in 56, he lost his political importance; so he tried to become an influential adviser to politicians. The decline of institutions and the personal ambition of Roman leaders ultimately curtailed his influence on Roman political life and thus caused his attempt to prevent the civil war to fail.
