520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The peripheral expansion of Mexico City’s agglomeration is today following the dynamics imposed by the domination of the enormous social housing construction companies. The volume of production has been massive – almost 400000 housing units built over the past ten years – and has pushed out extensively at the agglomeration’s margins. These developments have led to poorer standards of the models, and greater uniformity of the housing stock. This phenomenon takes the form of an unprecedented urban “object”, the “urban estates”, the enormous size and functional paucity of which comes along with an insular-style design. The article explores how the people who live in this new kind of urban periphery faced up to their life in a residential space whose very character tends to isolate inhabitants, both socially and spatially.
