| Summary, etc. | How many words does a child know? This question led to the design of three studies. The aim of study 1 was to make an inventory of the words encountered in French elementary schools from grade 1 to grade 5, including technical vocabulary (e.g. History). This vocabulary is thus qualified as “encyclopedic vocabulary.” The results show 11,095 semantically distinct terms. Study 2 aimed to estimate the vocabulary acquired at the end of each school grade. The aim of study 3 was to reassess how many of the 11,095 elementary school words were retained. The assessment gave a figure of almost 9,000 words at the end of grade 5. |
