520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The reformist discourse adopted by the Algerian regime after President Bouteflika came to power in 1999 foregrounded the emancipation of women in all spheres of public and private life. In debate over this issue, the government and Islamist groups alike often made use of the religious frame of reference to support their positions. Through an analysis of the main reforms concerning women’s status adopted by the Algerian government over the past twenty years, this article sheds light on aspects of the political debates and arguments made for or against the proposed reforms.
