Summary, etc. Bullying in schools emerges from a peer system, consisting of several interacting students who bind themselves to repeatedly assault peers. This paper explores the function of bullying in relation to adolescent cultures and norms; its aim is to understand the needs expressed by inappropriate and anti-social behavior. Forty-five adolescents (female= 22; male= 23; other= 0) aged between 10 and 17 (Av.= 14) and living in Switzerland took part in focus groups and individual interviews about their experiences of bullying. The results show that violence reflects the prevailing norms within groups of young people, indicating what behaviour is more or less expected from peers and responding to identity issues.
