| Summary, etc. | Amorcées dès la conquête d’Alger en 1830, les migrations européennes s’amplifient quand la France décide d’y installer une colonie de peuplement à partir de 1840. Or, bien que la présence de femmes européennes en Algérie soit avérée dès les premiers recensements démographiques, les nombreuses études concernant les migrations européennes sont pour l’essentiel asexuées. Cet article revisite ces flux migratoires au regard du genre. L’analyse de données quantitatives fournies par l’administration française tant en métropole qu’en Algérie (relevés de dossiers de départ déposés en préfecture, recensements démographiques des Européens établis en Algérie, mortuaires des étrangers) permet de mettre en évidence des comportements migratoires plus ou moins familiaux et des sex-ratios différents selon les nationalités et les périodes. Ces constatations sont confirmées et explicitées par des sources qualitatives (récits/témoignages et historiographie migratoire). |

| Summary, etc. | European migration, which began with the conquest of Algiers in 1830, increased when France decided to establish a settlement colony there from the 1840s However, although the presence of European women in Algeria is clear from the first demographic censuses, the numerous studies of European migrants pay little attention to sex ratios. This article revisits these migration flows from a gender perspective. The analysis of quantitative data provided by the French administration in both metropolitan France and Algeria (exit applications submitted to French prefectures, demographic censuses of Europeans living in Algeria, death certificates of foreigners), makes it possible to highlight patterns of migratory behaviour, whether family-oriented or otherwise, and different sex ratios according to nationality and period. Qualitative sources (narratives/testimonies and migration historiography) are drawn on to confirm and clarify such patterns of behavior. |
