What the analyst hears is not what they think they hear. No more than the patient says what they think they are saying. Being without either memory or desire, as Bion recommends, paves the way for a form of exchange in which the unformed takes on meaning. This particular form of wandering reaches its destination by allowing for the unexpected appearance of unconscious patterns. |
