Summary, etc. The overall objective of this work is to study the dependence relationships between the aristocracy, the peasantry and the state in fifth- and sixth-century southern Gaul. Current opinion in historiography claims that late antique peasantry should be seen as a class subject to considerable exploitation (either through taxes or through rent). Instead, we propose that the strong crisis of the ancient political order led to the coexistence of divergent processes : the reaffirmation of dependence relationships and even the appearance of new ones (the “ patrocinia”, wich will be analyzed in detail), but also the growing indepedence of many peasants. The last one finally prevailed, resulting in the emergence of a “peasant-base society”.
