520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The study of vocabulary can potentially improve our understanding of the diverse practices and operations carried out by the ancient Greeks to attack and occupy enemy settlements. This paper surveys the relevant literary sources of the Archaic and Classical periods to reconstruct how the ancient Greeks themselves conceptualized those practices, through which terms and expressions and according to which ideas and concepts. It will be argued that the Greek approach to poliorcetics was much broader than the modern idea of “siege” seems to entail and that it was ultimately connected to their notion and experience of land warfare in general.
