Summary, etc. Since the 19th century, three hypotheses have clashed about the passage of Polybius, History, III, 39, 8, which indicates the existence of a road marked out with milestones between Ampurias (Roman Spain) and the Rhône. A first group of researchers considers it to be an interpolation mentioning the uia Domitia (established around 118 BC), and a second, that Polybius lived long enough to know this road. Finally, a third group believes that the passage describes a situation before the last quarter of the 2nd century BC, before the traditional date of conquest of Western Transalpine Gaul. Although this hypothesis is generally accepted today (Molin in Foulon 2004 and 2009; Roman 2009), no study had yet examined in detail the main argument put forward to support the interpolation thesis: the exclusive use of the Attic stade by Polybius in his writings. This article will also be an opportunity to return to the arguments presented by the supporters of late insertion, and those in favour of Polybian authenticity. New elements to support this last hypothesis are also proposed.
