Summary, etc. | Under the effect of an irresistible change in the context of private life from the end of the 1960s onwards, conjugality is destined gradually to become independent of parenthood as the function of the marriage-institution in founding the family is increasingly challenged. Family policy is therefore shifting towards leaving aside the couple. Indeed, the couple’s foundation is now seen to be based on the principle of reciprocal consent, becoming a matter of the free will of the individuals. This leads to strengthening support for parenthood through reinforcing the bond between the child and his or her parents and recognising their role as the main instrument of education. Affirmation of institutional support for parents (as shown, for example, by the institutionalisation of family mediation) ensues, while the fate of marital counselling is demoted to the good offices of civil society. |
