Summary, etc. | At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries a mass condom industry emerged. The manufacture of this technical device was made possible by globalization and it soon underwent significant international and imperial circulation. This paper contends that the globalization of the condom industry led to a standardization of its marketing, which had a lasting impact on its consumption and contributed to frame its uses. This article examines the marketing strategies adopted by French and foreign manufacturers in France between 1890 and 1940, whether in terms of the packaging and labels they adopted, the trademarks they used or the advertising strategies that they implemented. It shows that this marketing contributed to the gendering of the condom as a male product and to its close association with venereal disease and extramarital sex. It thus suggests that the emergence of a globalized condom market has played a central role in the lasting marginalization of the condom within the field of available contraceptive methods, especially for couples. |
