Summary, etc. | We rely on J. Habermas’s norms of communicative action to analyze the relationships between unanimity and decision, in contexts where stakeholders’ unanimity is the main foundation for legitimate collective action. We first translate the norms of communicative action into the language of decision theory. We then describe two case studies that illustrate situations of agreement and disagreement according to these norms. A detailed discussion of these case studies allows us to develop an interpretation of the main components of the norm and of their translation into the concepts of rational decision theory. We briefly conclude by showing how the norms of communicative action, so interpreted, combine speech acts and choice acts in order to produce democratic life forms. |
