| Summary, etc. | Dès son apparition, le formalisme a été l’objet de discussions et de polémiques, ce qui a conduit ses représentants à prendre à leur tour la parole pour défendre le mouvement. Nous traduisons ici un texte inédit en français de Boris Tomaševskij, « La méthode formelle (en guise de nécrologie) », rédigé dès 1922, publié en 1925, et dont l’intérêt est loin d’être anecdotique. Il replace la genèse du formalisme dans un large contexte historico-culturel et précise la nature du mouvement, qui n’est pas une doctrine constituée mais repose sur un principe fondamental : étudier en littérature ce qui est donné (y compris la composante idéologique qu’aucun formaliste n’ignore), et le faire d’une façon spécifiquement littéraire. |

| Summary, etc. | From the time of its appearance, formalism was a subject of discussion and polemics, leading its representatives in turn to speak out in defense of the movement. Here we translate a text by Boris Tomaševskij, hitherto unpublished in French, “The formal method (by way of an obituary),” written in 1922 and published in 1925, whose interest is far from anecdotal. It situates the genesis of formalism in a broad historical and cultural context and spells out the nature of the movement, which is not a well-formed doctrine but is based on a fundamental principle : study in literature what is given (including the ideological component that no formalist ignores) and do it in a specifically literary way. |

| Summary, etc. | Desde su aparición, el formalismo fue objeto de debates y polémicas, lo que llevó a sus representantes a tomar a su vez la palabra para defender el movimiento. Traducimos aquí un texto inédito en francés de Boris Tomaševskij, “El método formal (a modo de necrología)”, redactado desde 1922, publicado en 1925, y cuyo interés dista mucho de ser anecdótico. Sitúa el génesis del formalismo en un amplio contexto histórico-cultural y define la naturaleza del movimiento, que no es una doctrina constituida sino que estriba en un principio fundamental : estudiar en literatura lo que está dado (incluso el componente ideológico que ningún formalista ignora) y hacerlo de manera específicamente literaria. |
