| Summary, etc. | Jugée aujourd’hui irrationnelle, disqualifiée comme un « mythe fallacieux », la notion de race garde toute sa valeur explicative en France comme en Europe, au Japon ou aux États-Unis, à la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. À l’Institut d’ethnologie, Paul Rivet enseigne l’anthropologie somatique, laquelle a pour but d’« établir la diagnose des différentes races ». À sa suite, le musée de l’Homme voudra dresser un inventaire de la diversité humaine, mais sans « recourir au racisme ». Entendons, en le condamnant comme une « idéologie » pernicieuse dont une science « neutre », impartiale, peut et doit faire justice. La race sans le racisme ?Le bien-fondé de cette enquête semble peu suspecté. Il répond d’ailleurs d’un héritage ancré dans l’histoire déjà ancienne du Jardin des Plantes. Critiquée quoique toujours admise, la rhétorique de la race représente, avec le recul, le point aveugle du processus de légitimation de l’ethnologie savante. Ces paradoxes méritent examen. |

At the Institut d’ethnologie (Institute of Ethnology), Paul Rivet teaches somatic anthropology, the aim of which is “to establish the diagnosis of the different races”. Following him, the Musée de l’Homme will want to draw up an inventory of human diversity, but without “resorting to racism”. Let us understand, by condemning it as a pernicious “ideology” of which a “neutral”, impartial science can and must do justice. Race without racism ?The validity of this inquiry is rarely questioned. | Summary, etc. | Considerada hoy en día un concepto irracional, descalificada como “mito falaz”, la noción de raza conserva todo su valor explicativo tanto en Francia como en Europa, Japón o Estados Unidos, en vísperas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En el Institut d’Éthnologie, Paul Rivet enseña antropología somática, con el objetivo de “establecer el diagnóstico de las diferentes razas”. Siguiendo su estela, el Musée de l’Homme intentará hacer un inventario de la diversidad humana, pero sin “recurrir al racismo”, es decir, condenándolo como una “ideología” perniciosa frente a la cual una ciencia “neutral” e imparcial puede y debe hacer justicia. ¿Raza sin racismo ?Esta investigación parece cargada de fundamento. Además, responde a un patrimonio arraigado en la ya antigua historia del Jardin des Plantes. Criticada, aunque sin dejar de darla por buena, la retórica de la raza representa, en retrospectiva, el punto ciego en el proceso de legitimación de la etnología académica. Estas paradojas merecen un examen. |
