| Summary, etc. | Si le mouvement de rationalisation domestique est déjà bien connu des spécialistes du travail, du genre et de la consommation dans la France du xxe siècle, il s’agit ici de montrer comment le ménage fut présenté à la fin du xixe siècle, d’abord en Amérique, ensuite en France, comme une science puis un art pour transformer le rythme de la vie quotidienne des femmes au foyer. En leur octroyant un nouveau statut d’experte, cet emploi du temps, minutieusement conçu pour alléger leurs tâches, les assignait aussi à résidence. |

| Summary, etc. | Although the tendency towards domestic rationalization is a well-known fact to specialists in the field of labour, gender and consumption in 20th century France, this paper will expose how household chores were – first in America, then in France – depicted, from the end of the 19th century onwards as a science, then as an art, with the ambition to transform housewives’ everyday lives, by rationalizing domestic work. By granting them the status of experts on the matter, the schedule, minutely calibrated to ease their workload, was also a device to confine them to their home. |

| Summary, etc. | El movimiento de racionalización doméstica es ya bien conocido por los especialistas en trabajo, género y consumo en la Francia del siglo xx. El objetivo es mostrar cómo el hogar se presentó a finales del siglo xix, primero en América y luego en Francia, como una ciencia y después como un arte, para transformar el ritmo de la vida cotidiana de las amas de casa racionalizando el trabajo doméstico. Al acceder a una nueva condición de “expertas”, el horario meticulosamente diseñado para aligerar sus tareas también supuso un arresto domiciliario. |
