| Summary, etc. | Les dernières décennies ont vu l’éducation arabo-islamique au Sénégal s’ouvrir progressivement et s’adapter à un public féminin grandissant. Cet article analyse les modalités de cette récente ouverture visant, d’une part, à protéger les jeunes filles contre les maux dont la société serait porteuse, et, d’autre part, à les préparer à leurs futurs rôles sociaux qui répondraient à des normes religieuses spécifiques. Dès lors, l’éducation arabo-islamique devient un lieu d’observation et de compréhension des représentations en matière d’éducation des filles et des rapports de genre. Tout en plaçant la femme au cœur des dynamiques des reconfigurations sociales, le champ éducatif se révèle un lieu de fabrication mais aussi de négociation des discours et représentations d’un idéal féminin. |

| Summary, etc. | Education for girls and (re)configured gender relationsRecent decades have seen a gradual opening up and adaptation to larger numbers of women in Senegalese Arabic and Islamic schools. This article analyzes how on the one hand this broadened access aims to protect young girls from social evils, and on the other hand would prepare them for future roles meeting specific religious norms. Thus Arabic and Islamic education now provides a locus for investigating both schooling for girls and gender relations. Even as the education system places women at the center of social reconfigurations, it also fabricates and promotes a “feminine ideal” in its discourse and images. |
