| Summary, etc. | Entre janvier et mars 1793, pendant l’éphémère occupation française des « provinces belgiques », les comédiens de la troupe de la Montansier donnèrent une série de représentations à Bruxelles. Cet article se fonde sur une relecture des lettres de la Montansier au ministre des Affaires étrangères Lebrun. Considérées comme des « écrits au pouvoir », elles permettent d’enrichir le schéma classique sur la propagande révolutionnaire, au-delà de l’alternative entre diffusion spontanée et action du gouvernement. Loin d’être des instruments passifs, ses agents apparaissent comme des intermédiaires autonomes capables dans ces actions d’écriture de devancer les attentes du pouvoir, de mettre en scène leur adhésion, voire de le manipuler. L’étude montre également les contradictions qui dans la pratique minèrent l’entreprise, entre libération et conquête, objectifs proclamés et motivations personnelles, volonté politique et contraintes économiques, ambition de toucher un public populaire et ignorance des conditions locales. |

| Summary, etc. | Between January and March 1793, during the short French occupation of the “Belgium provinces,” actors of the troupe Montansier gave a series of performances in Brussels. This article is based on a re-examination of the letters of Montansier to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lebrun. Considered as “ecrits au pouvoir” they enhance the classical repertory of Revolutionary propaganda, between spontaneous diffusion and government action. Far from being passive instruments, these agents appear as autonomous intermediaries capable in these writings to anticipate the attacks of power, to dramatize their commitments, even to manipulate the public. This study further shows how the contradictions that in practice undermine an enterprise – between liberation and conquest, stated goals and personal motivation, political will and economic limitations, the ambition to reach a popular public and the ignorance of local conditions. |
