| Summary, etc. | La tradition romaine oppose à la femme étrusque, présente aux spectacles et aux banquets, symbole de toutes les licences, la chaste matrone filant la laine au milieu de ses servantes. Mais l’évolution des mœurs et du droit à Rome – à la différence du monde grec – donne à la femme une place reconnue dans la société, et notamment dans les banquets publics et privés. Cette place de la matrone à table reste subordonnée à la présence du mari, mais des femmes païennes, puis chrétiennes ont l’initiative de fondations funéraires comportant des repas sur les tombes. |

| Summary, etc. | Roman tradition shows the Etruscan women, who used to attend banquets and spectacles, as symbols of immoral behaviour, whereas the chaste Roman matronae spent their time spinning the wool with their maids. But, with the Law and the mores evolving in Rome (unlike the Greek world), women are given a position in society, especially in public and prived banquets. The matronae may only sit at the table if the husbands are present, but pagan (and, later, Christian) women start funerary foundations involving having meals on the tombs. |
