| Summary, etc. | Deux documents sont analysés dans cet article : la photographie d’une famille française dans laquelle le plus jeune enfant est porté par la « nénène » malgache (1903) et un extrait d’entretien réalisé auprès d’une femme née de deux parents métis en 1931, évoquant les liens avec sa nourrice. Ces deux documents permettent de mettre en lumière les types de sources mobilisables pour écrire une histoire des domestiques à Madagascar aux xixe et xxe siècles mais aussi d’analyser les rapports de domination et d’affection qui ont pu se jouer dans l’intimité du lien entre la « nénène » et les différents membres de la famille, en particulier les enfants et leur mère. L’entretien permet aussi d’éclairer la manière dont le recrutement pouvait s’effectuer, reposant avant tout sur des qualités morales plutôt que sur des compétences reconnues et valorisées. |

| Summary, etc. | Two documents are at the core of this article : a 1903 photograph in which the Malagasy “nénène” holds the youngest child of a French family and an extract from an interview with a métis woman born in 1931, recounting the relationship with her nanny. These two documents highlight the types of sources that can be used to write a history of domestic servants in Madagascar in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They also allow us to analyze the relationships of domination and affection that may have played out in the intimate relations existing between the “nénène” and family members. The interview also helps to shed light on the recruitment process, based above all on moral qualities rather than on recognized skills. |
