Comment, dans sa vie et dans son atelier, chacun vit-il la confrontation avec l’autre sexe ? L’acte de peindre transcende les rapports ordinaires entre hommes et femmes, mais les règles sociales imposent des comportements différents selon les sexes. Qu’il s’agisse de la reconnaissance publique, de la pratique d’un métier ou des formes d’expression de la sensualité picturale, les voies ouvertes aux unes et aux autres ne sont pas semblables. |

| Summary, etc. | This articles reexamines for the XIXth century the literary theme of the painter and his model (a desired woman watched by a male artist), drawing on the private writings of Delacroix, Renoir, Morisot and Bashkirseff. How was each of them, in his/her life and in his/her studio, involved with the other sex? The act of painting transcended the ordinary relations between men and women, but social rules imposed different behaviour according to the sex. The possibilities open to each were not the same, whether with regard to public recognition, the practice of one’s craft or the forms of sensual expression in painting. |
