520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | According to linguists, the English language is structurally less gendered than the French one. When translating contemporary English literary texts, a French female translator is assigned much less to her femininity and to the female gender in her source language than she is in her target language, her mother tongue—a situation the subject may consider to be a freedom. For instance, terms such as translator, writer, or lover have no gender in English. This phenomenological experience is in contrast with French supporters of “l’écriture inclusive” (inclusive writing), who argue for a feminization of the French language! Do we definitely have to choose a gender, or should we favor a little gender confusion? |
