| Summary, etc. | S’appuyant sur une enquête sociologique dans le milieu funéraire aujourd’hui en France, l’article examine la mobilisation du corps des agents de pompes funèbres dans les dimensions techniques et relationnelles de leur travail quotidien. Dans sa mise en scène comme dans l’exécution des prestations, le corps des opérateurs apparait d’abord comme objet de socialisation et de prescriptions professionnelles précises. En raison du contexte sensible de leur activité, les agents sont cependant aussi sujets à l’expérience d’émotions spécifiques et amenés à s’adapter parfois rapidement aux circonstances. Les agents doivent donc composer entre les prescriptions comportementales et la prise en compte de leur sensibilité. Bien qu’individuellement produite, cette composition, comprise comme travail émotionnel, fait l’objet de régulations et de mises en sens collectives qui l’expliquent et qui peuvent se comprendre en référence au contexte historique, social et culturel du travail funéraire. |

| Summary, etc. | Involvement of the Body in the Work of Undertakers. Techniques, Relationships and Emotional Processes. This article is based on a sociological survey recently carried out within the undertaking business in France, and examines how the undertaker’s body becomes involved in the technical and relational dimensions of their daily work. In the staging and carrying out of everyday tasks, the undertaker’s body first appears as an object for socialisation and the carrying out of precise professional tasks. Yet due to the sensitive nature of their activity, undertakers are also subjected to highly charged emotional experiences and are sometimes obliged to adapt themselves very quickly to specific circumstances. They must know how to reconcile behavioural instructions with the sensitiveness of their nature. Although produced on an individual level, this reconciliation, as an emotional process, is the object of regulations and collective procedures offering inherent explanations and which may be understood from the historical, social and cultural standpoint of funereal rites. |
