Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Extreme body in contemporary art The human body, present in art by tradition, is more and more in evidence in contemporary art, where it becomes the raw material of the aesthetic act; this brings into play an infinite range of explorations of the body, in particular in Body Art. Within a cultural context which does not accept biological determination as immutable but as transformable data, the body becomes an object to be transformed; this can be observed in a hospital environment as well as in the realm of aesthetics. There is a new stage in this development : handicap, deformity, portrayals of sick people, are subjects which are of increasing interest to painters and photographers. These artistic approaches are related to what the clinician observes in new body clinics (body-piercing, scarification, tattoos, plastic surgery, self-mutilation, transsexualism); a subject who seeks to change his/her appearance may go as far as self-injury. In contemporary art, the whole body is part of the work, both from the viewpoint of the observer and of the artist. |
