520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Hallucination and Nebenmensch : Goya and Teresa of Avila The thoughts of Freud in L’Esquisse concerning the form of the hallucination according to the response of the good Samaritan, the Nebenmensch, could be examined from two different perspectives : painting and mysticism. First of all there is Goya’s self-portrait made in 1820, where the artist shows himself supported by his doctor : “Self-portrait with Dr Arrieta”, and in the background three faces, which look like hallucinations, can be seen ; then, “The Interior Castle” (1577) by Teresa of Avila, in which the mystic proposes a reflection on the life-giving visionary experience, thanks to the man she calls a “learned” confessor. As with a witticism, the presence of the reader or viewer transforms the painful hallucination into a creative vision. |
