| Summary, etc. | Nous analysons ici le sujet de la tradition et de la transmission des pratiques baptismales dans les églises africaines entre le IIIe et le Ve siècles, à travers l’étude de quelques fragments de l’ouvrage De baptismo libri VII d’Augustin d’Hippone, où sont reprises certains lettres de Cyprien de Carthage ayant trait à la querelle baptismale avec l’évêque Étienne de Rome au IIIe siècle. On observe la façon dont Augustin, dans le contexte du conflit avec les donatistes, utilise les écrits de Cyprien pour récupérer la tradition religieuse africaine qui était disputée par l’église donatiste. À cette fin, l’évêque d’Hippone manipule la transmission de certains textes de l’œuvre de Cyprien pour les adapter aux nouvelles perspectives théologiques catholiques du Ve siècle. |

| Summary, etc. | Tradition and Transmission: Augustine, Cyprian, and the question of baptism in the context of the Donatist schism This paper discusses the question of tradition and transmission of baptismal practices in African churches between the third and fifth centuries. It examines fragments from of De baptismo libri VII by Augustine of Hippo, which cites letters by Cyprian of Carthage on the baptismal controversy with Bishop Stephen of Rome in the third century. This leads to observations on the way in which Augustine, in the context of the conflict with the Donatists, uses the writings of Cyprian to retrieve the African religious tradition disputed by the Donatist church. For this purpose, the Bishop of Hippo manipulates the textual transmission of works by Cyprian to adapt them to new, fifth-century Catholic theological perspectives. |
