| Summary, etc. | Lorsque Démosthène dans Contre Midias invoque l’ἄδεια, on peut supposer que dans la ville régnait un sentiment d’insécurité quant à son efficacité à protéger les droits et à maintenir l’ordre. Cependant, il serait plus pertinent de concevoir l’ἄδεια conformément au code des valeurs et de l’éthique politique des Athéniens, lorsqu’ils circulaient dans l’espace public, et plus particulièrement, conformément à leur besoin de montrer de manière ostentatoire leur statut de citoyens libres. En d’autres termes, la menace que quelqu’un puisse devenir la victime d’un acte violent mettait en question sa place égale parmi ses concitoyens. De plus, l’absence de peur marque la mise en place d’un mode de vie « politique », dans lequel le désordre et le terrorisme ne devraient plus être tolérés. |

| Summary, etc. | Political Goods and the Habitus of Freedom (on Demosthenes, XXI, 222)When Demosthenes in his Against Meidias invokes ἄδεια, one may assume that a sense of insecurity silently prevailed in the city as regards its efficiency to protect legal interests and maintain order. However, it seems more accurate for ἄδεια to be construed in terms of the Athenian code of values and the political morality applied whilst present in public space; namely, in terms of their need to conspicuously display their free-citizen identity. In other words, the threat of being a victim of violence called into question one’s equal status with his fellow citizens. Moreover, absence of fear demarcated the consolidation of “political” living under which disorder and terrorism would be no longer tolerable. |
