| Summary, etc. | Résumé : Byzance hérita de Rome un système monétaire plurimétallique sophistiqué qu’elle parvint à maintenir pendant près d’un millénaire en l’adaptant à un contexte changeant et difficile. Sa hiérarchisation contrastait avec la relative simplicité des systèmes en vigueur chez ses voisins occidentaux. Plusieurs innovations lui sont attribuables : l’introduction des marques de valeur sur la monnaie de bronze qui dura de 498 au début du viiie siècle, la datation annuelle systématique du bronze de 537 au début du viiie siècle, et une maitrise inégalée dans la purification des métaux ainsi que dans la conduite des différents procédés de dévaluation. Au cours du xie siècle, Byzance mit en œuvre la production de monnaies bombées dites « scyphates » typiques ensuite de la période tardive. |

| Summary, etc. | Abstract: Byzantium maintained the sophisticated Roman plurimetallic monetary system over a millennium, by contrast with the more restrained and simplistic systems of its Western neighbours. It successfully adapted it to change and to difficult contexts and introduced several innovations: systematic marks of value on the bronze small change from the late fifth to the eighth century, annual dating of most of these bronze coins from 537 through the early eighth century. It demonstrated a pioneering mastery of refining and debasement processes of gold coins and invented in the wake of the latter in the eleventh century the curious cup-shape (so-called scyphate) that became typical of the Late Byzantine period. |
