| Summary, etc. | La présence dans les Vies de l’ Histoire Auguste de réminiscences suétoniennes est depuis longtemps établie. Celles-ci sont de plusieurs types, structurelles, factuelles, mais aussi verbales : on note ainsi des citations qui vont du simple mot à une notice entière, reproduite en filigrane dans le texte. Nous avons, dans cet article, voulu, dans la continuité des travaux d’A. Chastagnol et G. Porta, faire un relevé exhaustif de celles contenues dans une des premières biographies du recueil, la Vita Commodi, pour tenter de comprendre quelles étaient sur ce point les intentions de l’auteur. Elles étaient sans doute d’abord morales : Commode est implicitement assimilé, parfois au prix d’une déformation historique incontestable, aux deux archétypes du tyran impérial, Caligula et Néron. Mais elles sont peut-être surtout littéraires : l’auteur de l’ Histoire Auguste, sans doute à la suite d’une de ses sources remontant au début du IIIe siècle, Marius Maximus, a fait de l’ imitatio de Suétone, très lu et admiré sous l’Empire, un principe important de composition de sa Vie. Certaines citations constituent même peut-être un clin d’œil malicieux que le biographe, nostalgique des valeurs et de la culture romaines traditionnelles, a, au tournant des IVe et Ve siècles après J.C., adressé à son lecteur érudit. |

| Summary, etc. | History of a palimpsest : Suetonius’ Nero and Caligula in the Vita Commodi of the Historia Augusta The presence in the Vitae of the Historia Augusta of reminiscences of Suetonius has been well established for some time. They are of several types, structural, factual, but also verbal : quotations which go from the simple word to a whole note. In this article we have tried, continuing the work of A. Chastagnol and G. Porta, to make an exhaustive survey of those contained in one of the first biographies of the collection, the Vita Commodi, in order to understand the intentions of the author. They were undoubtedly moral : Commodus is implicitly compared, sometimes with undeniable historical distorsions, to the two prototypes of the imperial tyrant, Caligula and Nero. But they may more especially be literary : the author of the Historia Augusta, perhaps following one of his sources going up to the beginning of 3rd century, Marius Maximus, made of the imitatio of Suetonius (who was much read and admired under the Empire) an important principle of composition of the Vita. Some quotations constitute perhaps a malicious wink that the biographer, nostalgic of Roman traditional values and culture, addressed to his reader at the turning of 4th and 5th centuries A.D. |
