520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | “ Anaplerosis and agoge at the time of Kings Agis IV (244–241) and Cleomenes III (235-222)” Agoge or “discipline” is not a technical term to describe the Spartan education system or paideia. According to a tradition cited by Plutarch in his Life of Cleomenes (11, 4), it had to do with the educational system created by Sphairos of Borysthenes for the neoi. Kings Agis and Cleomenes had to deal with the Spartan authorities and the threat of a stasis. They wanted to increase the civic body by an anaplerosis. In a difficult context, this agoge was a means to train the neoi and to integrate the new citizens within the same “Spartan way of life”. It was a guarantee given by Agis and Cleomenes that they respected the Lycurgan politeia. They were no tyrants. |
