520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Child disability and familial isolationThe concept of disability is evolving both ethically and in terms of how it is described. But, while there is progress on the theoretical side, attitudes tend to lag behind. Disability in children always generates a host of fears and contradictory representations in our society. The focus on this difference stigmatises and then plunges subjects into complex relational terms. Being the parent of a child with disabilities means sharing something of the stigma that the child endures. The interaction between the social environment and the family, the private and public generates tensions that become real psychic conflicts within the family group. From the perspective of psychological practice with disabled children and their families, we propose to explore the socio-psychological mechanisms implemented. Under the combined effect of their own childhood history and social messages relating to disability, parents will gradually develop defence mechanisms mainly marked by the avoidance of creating bonds with others. |
